How to Clean and Care for Custom Drapery

With proper care, quality custom drapery lasts 10 to 15 years — sometimes longer. Without it, sun and dust quietly destroy even the finest fabric in half that time. The good news: routine care is simple, and most of it takes minutes. Here's what to do, what to avoid, and when to call a professional.

Weekly to monthly: dust control

Dust is drapery's slow enemy. It works into fibers, dulls colors, and eventually abrades the fabric every time panels move.

• Vacuum with an upholstery brush attachment on low suction, working top to bottom. Monthly is ideal; every few weeks if you live near construction or a busy road (a familiar reality across fast-growing DFW neighborhoods).

• Shake out smaller panels outdoors occasionally — old-fashioned and effective.

• Dust the hardware too: rods, rings, and finials collect grime that transfers to fabric.

Spot cleaning: act fast, stay gentle

Spills happen. The rules:

1. Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes stains deeper and can distort the weave.

2. Use plain water first, then a tiny amount of mild detergent if needed.

3. Test in a hidden spot — inside the hem or behind the return — before touching a visible area.

4. Work from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading it.

Never use bleach, harsh solvents, or "miracle" cleaners on fine fabrics. And never put custom lined or interlined panels in a home washing machine — water can shrink linings at different rates than face fabrics, leaving you with puckered, misshapen panels.

Sun: the silent killer

In North Texas, UV damage is the number one threat to drapery — more than dirt, more than wear. Silk fades and weakens; even sturdy cottons bleach out on south and west exposures.

• Rotate panels occasionally if one side of a pair gets more sun.

• Close sheers or shades during peak afternoon hours to shield the face fabric.

• If your panels are lined, the lining takes the UV beating so your decorative fabric doesn't have to. If your panels are unlined and face brutal sun, consider adding a protective shade behind them.

Seasonal refresh

Twice a year, give your drapery a proper once-over:

• Vacuum thoroughly, including folds and hems where dust hides

• Check for loose threads, pulled pleats, or hardware that's working loose

• Steam lightly to release wrinkles — hold the steamer a few inches away and let gravity do the work (never press an iron directly on most drapery fabrics)

• Re-train pleats by loosely tying panels back for a day after steaming

When to call a professional

Some jobs belong to specialists:

• Delicate fabrics — silk, velvet, embroidered or beaded panels

• Interlined drapery, where improper cleaning ruins the internal layers

• Set-in stains, smoke odor, or water damage

• Any panel you're unsure about — a professional cleaning costs far less than replacing custom drapery

Look for cleaners who specialize in window treatments, not just a dry cleaner who "also does drapes." Ask specifically how they handle lined and pleated panels, and whether they take them down and rehang them.

Professional drapery maintenance

Here's something many homeowners don't know: you don't have to manage all of this yourself. Arus Design offers curtain service and maintenance across North Texas — professional cleaning coordination, pleat re-training, steaming, and hardware checks that keep custom drapery looking the way it did on installation day. Think of it like servicing anything else fine in your home.

What shortens drapery life

• Direct unfiltered sun, year after year

• Machine washing lined or structured panels

• Harsh chemicals and bleach

• Hanging damp panels (mildew loves Texas humidity)

• Pets climbing them (we love them anyway)

The bottom line

Vacuum regularly, blot spills immediately, respect the sun, and bring in professionals for the delicate stuff. Do that, and your investment pays you back for well over a decade.

If your existing drapery is looking tired — limp pleats, sun-faded folds, dusty hardware — a professional maintenance visit can often bring it back to life for a fraction of replacement cost. Book a consultation or request an online estimate to talk through options.

Quick takeaways

• Vacuum monthly with a brush attachment; blot (never rub) spills immediately.

• Texas sun is drapery's biggest enemy — lining and shades are its armor.

• Never machine-wash lined or interlined panels; call a window-treatment specialist instead.
